because, you know, it's all about religion.

Yahoo! News: Nearly Half In U.S. Say Restrict Muslims

The survey found 44 percent favored at least some restrictions on the civil liberties of Muslim Americans. Forty-eight percent said liberties should not be restricted in any way.

The survey showed that 27 percent of respondents supported requiring all Muslim Americans to register where they lived with the federal government. Twenty-two percent favored racial profiling to identify potential terrorist threats. And 29 percent thought undercover agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer organizations to keep tabs on their activities and fund-raising.

*age* To that 44% (and especially to that 29%): you people scare me.

Gah. Stupidity is on the march.

Stupidity, per se, I can deal with. Bigotry is another matter entirely, and the problem is that there are in fact some very intelligent--and, what's worse, influential--bigots just now.

I want a t shirt

I want a t shirt that says "I'm not with the majority."

In this kind of case, it wouldn't help me much to think "well, at least they're not a majority". (And in fact a plurality of people--48%--did say that they felt that their civil rights should not be restricted at all.) I'd still be depressed, and somewhat scared, if the fraction were 10%.

Would a Mandate, My Ass (http://www.cafepress.com/mandatemyass) T-shirt do? ;)
