For some reason, when I read that I had the feeling of being immersed in an historic moment. As in, the old world order falling away and a new one arising out of uncertainty. I'm not really sure why my psyche chose this one as opposed to any of the other historic things that have been going on lately. But it was a very interesting sensation to note.

Well, the Catholic Church is certainly up there in terms of large, influential, multinational organizations that have been around for a while, and it's not known for its rapid response to cultural change. So while this is apparently not unprecedented (although apparently each instance requires the Pope's approval), it is interesting in the sense that it may indicate that an evolutionary change is underway...which, for an organization like this, could have profound implications that affect far more than those who are members of its church.
