PSA: I've moved

Megan and I have been a tad busy lately. Part of this is the usual round of work-related stuff, part is the kind of busy that one expects of people with four small children.

A large part, however, has been the fact that we sold our house in Renton a bit under a month ago and are now living in an apartment in Bellevue. Basically a confluence of factors came to a head: we wanted a larger place that was much closer to work. So, of course, we moved into an apartment that's 2/3 the size of our old house (that is, undeniably, closer to work) while we look for a new house.

And yes, we bought in a seller's market (June 2006) and sold in a buyer's market. It kind of sucks, but on the other hand, (a) prices are still dropping around here so it would have gotten worse, and (b) at least the ridiculously expensive places around here are now only moderately expensive. Overall I think it will be a win, just a really painful one. (And the pain was essentially dictated by buying a house 5 years ago rather than waiting until, say, now. I am attempting to maintain the emotional stance that (a) we were actually renting our house--which (were it true) would make our losses only moderately ridiculous given rents around here, and (b) we are giving the most awesome wedding present to the almost-married-now couple (that we've never met) that just bought our house for $100K less than we paid for it. It helps a bit.)

So, yay for cutting way down on the soul-killing commute. It is now actually practical for me to ride my bike to work (and in fact that's a constraint that we're imposing on the places we're looking for) or to ride the bus (ditto).

More on this later, but I'd already put this notification off for much longer than I should.

Feel free to contact me via email to ask for the new address.

announcing the arrival of Liam Alan O'Madadhain

I am proud to announce that as of 12:48 PM PST, 16 August, Megan and I became the parents of Liam Alan O'Madadhain.

For those who want the stats: Liam weighed in at 3.6 kg (7 lbs. 15 oz.) and 51.5 cm (20 in.). Dark hair. Somewhat prominent ears.

For those who want pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/joshua.omadadhain/August2010#

For those who want name etymologies: Liam is an Irish Gaelic name meaning "stalwart defender", and Alan is a Breton name which may mean either "little rock" or "handsome".

Both mother and son are doing fine; we'll likely be heading home from the hospital Wednesday or Thursday. The other kids have visited twice (Megan's mom is looking after them while we're here), and they seem pretty excited about the whole thing.

announcement

Sometime around mid-August, [livejournal.com profile] tiedyechameleon and I will be having another child.

Current data are not conclusive, but we're fairly sure that it will either be a boy or a hermaphrodite. :) There's more to say about that, but for right now I'm just making this quick announcement so that I don't put it off any longer.

(If anyone is wondering whether we're planning on stopping here, it may (or may not) be informative to know that the child's nickname is "Encore".)

announcing the arrival of Adric Connor and Riley Owen O'Madadhain

We are proud to present our new twin boys:

Adric Connor (formerly known as "Baby B"), born 10:04 AM, 6 lbs 2 oz, 18 inches
and
Riley Owen (he who was once "Baby A"), born 10:06 AM, 7 lbs 11 oz, 19 inches

on Friday, 15 June 2007.

Megan and both boys are doing just fine; we came home from the hospital on Monday. Megan is actually doing very, very well in terms of recovery; she hasn't started doing handstands yet, but she's been up and about and only occasionally shows obvious signs of still being in recovery from major surgery (such as when laughing too hard makes her stomach hurt). Feeding two newborns is somewhat challenging, but we're working it out (imagine, for instance, Joshua finger-feeding both twins at once). Fortunately, Joshua has four weeks of parental leave (which he's taking now, on the grounds that otherwise he might as well not come home :) ), while Megan has 12 weeks off.

They're only a few days old, and they look pretty similar (especially when wrapped in a few blankets) but we're already starting to learn some differences between them. (We believe that they're fraternal rather than identical twins, although we haven't had this tested.) Adric is perhaps a bit more alert and aware of what's going on around him; he was checking things out when he was only a few hours old. Riley is more physical, and has several times demonstrated his patented 'thrashing' method of (a) escaping his wrappings and (b) deniably whapping his brother upside the head.

Corwin has been doing really well, for the most part. He likes spending time with the twins, would pick them up himself if given the opportunity, and only occasionally gets bent out of shape because they're using an old chair or stroller that he used to use.

As a silly astrological bonus: not only are they Geminis (heh)...since they were born in the Chinese Year of the (Fire) Pig (holy flaming pigs, Batman!), this of course means that they are Twin Pigs and that David Lynch will presumably be dropping by any time now to make a television show of them.

Pictures and other stuff are available at http://www.ics.uci.edu/~jmadden/twins .
