Police solve "Grey Train Robbery"

Two elderly women whose pictures were plastered across newspapers Thursday after they were caught on camera stealing a bag at a railway station have turned themselves in.

Police said the women admitted the offence and have received an official caution in a case variously dubbed the "Grey Train Robbery" and "Gran Larceny."

The women contacted police after the case received blanket media coverage under headlines such as "Nans on the Run" and "Artful Codgers."

All this is very funny, I admit...but I find it strange, at best, that those involved (the news media and police) spent so much time on such a case. I mean, really: how many muggings and assaults went unremarked or uninvestigated because of this?

Wait, all they got was an "official caution"? *harumph* Should've gotten petty theft and minor fines or minor community service, their choice.

You have this misapprehension that the purpose of the media is to do a good job at what they're supposed to do. The reality is that they do that for which we pay them.

We want grannies and puns.
