On the same line as torrent ducks, there is a water bird in our local rivers and streams, the Water Ouzel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Dipper), a passerine so a close relative of pigeons and doves. It so often amazes me... fearlessly swimming through rapids at the head of a waterfall, popping up and hopping out on a rock. I don't believe they are 'hardcore' with their young, but they are awesome little critters nonetheless.
