I'm with the mom, honestly. She knows her kid and her area.

I was raised free range and independent. I'm grateful for it.

I've seen the results of modern helocopter parenting and it's not good. Spoiled princes and princes who at 18 can't use a bus, balance checkbooks, hold a job, feed themselves, do laundry, etc.. No thanks.

I found an interesting paragraph in an essay called "The New Generation" by Bertrand Russell (written in the 1930's):

The smallness of the modern family has given parents a new sense of the value of the child. Parents who have only two children do not wish either to die, whereas out of the old-fashioned family of ten or fifteen, half could be sacrificed to carelessness with no great qualms. Modern scientific care of children is intimately bound up with the smallness of the modern family.
