We had to have the forest fires last year, so as to remove the trees and other vegetation that were holding the hillsides together, so that this year we could have the highly unusual and persistent rains that will presumably be causing landslides all over the place any time now (if they haven't already). All we need now is a moderate-intensity earthquake to set things off properly; fortunately, this is California, so hopefully we won't have too long to wait.

These things have to happen in their proper order, after all . . . .

(To those of you who might be moved to accuse me of soggy grapes on the strength of the above, now that I'm getting the rain I've been claiming to miss: recently, I've been getting some of the best sleep I've had in some time. I attribute this, at least in part, to going to sleep to the sound of rain. For me, this is way cool; I'm just glad that I don't have to drive much around here right now.)

there's no murphy's law about the whole fire, landslide, flood, earthquake thing. since all of them happen every year/every couple of years, they are bound to line up for optimum carnage most of the time. you just gotta roll with it, eh dude? wait til your first serious el nino. that is an awesome freak fest.

Well, of course. Hence the "sardonic" mood in which I posted this. Like I said, this isn't really affecting me personally; Megan and I got back into town right before this whole thing started coming down. I could probably calculate the likelihood of a one-two punch like this happening in a given 3-year period down here, and while I've got other things to do, I'd guess that it's about 10% or so.

Do I miss volcanoes? Of course. It's a pain trying to stock up on obsidian without them. ;)

Did you catch my incredible control over the weather last fall? By visiting three states, I created flood, earthquake, and a volcano eruption within a day of leaving. I was so cool.
