My four-week appointment was yesterday. A brief summary:

  • The health of my eyes is just fine; the surgical scars are still visible (to the optometrist with instruments--I've never been able to see them), but are not causing any distortion.
  • I can see 20/20 in my right eye, and similarly in my left "with difficulty". More quantitatively: I am about +.25/-.25 (hyperopic/astigmatic) in my right eye, and +.25/-.5 (hyperopic/astigmatic) in my left eye.
  • I still see halos. This seems not to have changed much, although it's hard to be sure (or to be quantitative about it, if I did think it had changed).

I do notice the left-eye astigmatism, basically as a general feeling that everything is just barely not quite in focus. But from a functional standpoint, it's negligible, and from a psychological standpoint, it's not a big deal.

How's your night vision? Have you driven at night, and do you find the halos distracting?

That's weird, I thought I'd addressed that, but I see that I haven't.

The short answers: decent, yes, and a little bit. It's rather like driving through a light mist, except that you only see the "misting" effect around (bright) lights. It's distracting, I think, mostly in that it's unusual. It probably does affect my night vision somewhat in the context of bright lights at night, but I feel comfortable driving. I'm also given to understand that (a) the haloing should diminish, if not disappear, over time, and that (b) the haloing is significantly reduced by the Wavefront LASIK process.

I should also mention that my eyes were about at the limit of what can be done with LASIK (perhaps my astigmatism could have been worse, but as you noted, very very few people have myopia as bad as mine was). If your eyes are close to this bad, you would want to exercise some care in your choice of practitioner--and ask specific questions about what his/her numbers (absolute and percentages) are for people of your correction and worse.
