I was talking with my officemate about the problems that Megan and I have been having with finding a used minivan that has certain specific properties; it's become difficult because we found something within epsilon of The Perfect Van about a month ago, and just missed being able to buy it. Thing is, because we found something so close, it's hard for other vans not to suffer by comparison, so we've passed up a couple of opportunities where perhaps we shouldn't.

His suggestion was that I should take a dose of Lethe (i.e., to the non-classically-edumacated out there, that we should try our best to forget about that van we missed).

My instantaneous response was "Oh, Lethe, you're so fine/You're so fine, you wipe my mind/Oh Lethe."

You know, if I weren't me, I'd wonder about me sometimes.

Some of these are just beautiful.

(Hey, look--inadvertent self-referential story entry!)

(I'm reminded of the time when a friend of mine and I would take turns picking six words out of the dictionary and sending them to the other person, who'd then have to write a short story using them. It would be fun to do that again sometime when I'm not heavily overcommitted. :) )

Of course, one of my LJ 'friends' (I quote this only because it's more of an artist/fanboy thing) has already posted her take on this, and her army of readers is responding: http://ursulav.livejournal.com/545004.html

via BoingBoing: Holy Tango of Literature

An anthology (or, rather, "holy tango") of poetry and play scenes whose unifying theme is that each (original) work is inspired by, and written in the style of, an existing writer. Thus we have "Hairball King" (Kahlil Gibran), "My Valentine Isn't Clad" (Edna St. Vincent Millay), "Ah, My Yak Roam" (Omar Khayyam), "Hen Gonads" (Ogden Nash) and "Is A Sperm Like A Whale?" (William Shakespeare).

Very funny. While I'm not familiar with the work of several of the artists, I think that he does a good job of copying the styles, and the works themselves are generally also amusing.

(If any Portland Reading Night-affiliated folks are reading this: I call dibs.)

(The author has also recorded a few songs with similar inspiration. Haven't read/listened to those yet.)
