Of course--as long as we're being intellectually snarky here--they're missing a potentially significant cost: that incurred when one believes that the seat is down and acts accordingly...and it's not.

Or when men assume the seat is up and it is not. One of my male friends gives this as his reason for always leaving the seat up. In my house the policy is the lid stays down - I have this bizarre fear of my bird falling into the toilet!

Good point.

The first week we had our current set of cats, one of them fell into the toilet. (She was perhaps 3 months old at the time.) So it's perhaps not quite so bizarre as you might suppose. :)
